Ford Falcon XK 1960-1962 Front and Rear Suspension Trouble Diagnosis

Proper suspension operation is essential for vehicle stability, ride comfort and steering control. When suspension problems occur they may appear as vibration, poor ride quality, steering pull or abnormal tyre wear. Correct diagnosis requires identifying the symptom and then tracing the cause through the suspension, steering or wheel components.

Because many suspension symptoms are also related to tyres, wheels or steering adjustments, these components should always be inspected before disassembling suspension parts.

Preliminary Checks

Before beginning any suspension trouble diagnosis, check the tyre pressures in all tyres and ensure they are set to the recommended specifications.

Incorrect tyre pressures are a common cause of ride and handling problems and can produce symptoms similar to suspension faults.

After confirming correct tyre pressure, visually inspect tyres for uneven wear, damage or mismatched sizes which may affect vehicle stability.

Suspension Trouble Symptoms and Causes

Various suspension and steering problems can produce similar driving symptoms. For this reason it is important to determine the exact cause before replacing or adjusting suspension components.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Abnormal or irregular tyre wear

  • Squeals, thumps or rattles during driving

  • Sagging at one wheel or corner of the vehicle

  • Hard or rough ride quality

  • Wheel shimmy or wheel tramp

  • Side-to-side wandering while driving

  • Vehicle pulling to one side

  • Excessive body sway or roll when cornering

Many of these symptoms may also be caused by wheel alignment problems, tyre defects or steering system issues. Therefore, always confirm that the problem originates in the front or rear suspension before attempting repairs.

Common Causes of Suspension Trouble

Incorrect Tyre Pressure

Improper tyre inflation can cause irregular tyre wear, unstable handling and excessive body sway. Both over-inflation and under-inflation can lead to suspension-like symptoms.

Incorrect Front Wheel Alignment

Incorrect wheel alignment affects steering stability and tyre wear. Poor alignment can cause the vehicle to pull to one side, wander during driving or produce abnormal tyre wear patterns.

Incorrect Front Wheel Bearing Adjustment

Wheel bearings that are too loose or too tight can cause vibration, noise and irregular wheel movement which may appear as suspension problems.

Tyre Sizes Not Uniform

Using tyres of different sizes or types on the same vehicle can upset suspension balance and produce handling instability.

Wheel Out of Balance

An unbalanced wheel can cause vibration, shimmy and rough ride conditions, particularly at higher speeds.

Out-of-Round Wheel or Brake Drum

A wheel or brake drum that is not perfectly round may cause vibration or pulsation during driving or braking.

Unequal Brake Adjustment

Improper brake adjustment can cause the vehicle to pull to one side during braking or produce wheel shimmy.

Sagging or Broken Spring

A weakened or broken suspension spring can cause the vehicle to sag at one corner, produce poor ride quality and allow excessive body roll during turns.

Overloaded Spring or Tyre

Excessive load on the suspension system may overload the springs or tyres, resulting in rough ride and abnormal tyre wear.

Loose or Worn Shock Absorber

Shock absorbers control suspension movement. If they become loose or worn, the vehicle may bounce excessively or sway during cornering.

Worn Suspension Arm Bushings

Suspension arm bushings isolate vibration and maintain correct suspension geometry. Worn bushings can produce rattles, instability and irregular tyre wear.

Lack of Lubrication

Many suspension components require proper lubrication for smooth operation. Insufficient lubrication can cause noise, wear and reduced suspension performance.

Diagnosis Considerations

When diagnosing suspension trouble, always inspect tyres, wheels and steering components as well as suspension parts. Because many symptoms overlap, replacing suspension components without proper inspection may not correct the problem.

A careful inspection and systematic diagnosis will ensure the correct component is repaired or replaced, restoring proper ride and handling characteristics.
