Jaguar V12 E Type | carmanualsdirect

The history of the Jaguar brand spans nearly a century, originating with the Swallow Sidecar Company founded by William Lyons and William Walmsley in 1922.

The company initially produced motorcycle sidecars before expanding into coach building for passenger cars. In 1935, the Jaguar name first appeared on a 2.5 litre saloon.

After World War II, Jaguar established itself as a maker of stylish sports cars and luxury saloons, with the iconic XK120 roadster debuting in 1948.

The 1950s and 60s marked a golden age for Jaguar, with the launch of the legendary C-Type and D-Type race cars that dominated Le Mans, as well as the sophisticated Mark 2 saloon and sleek E-Type sports car.

Financial troubles led to Jaguar being absorbed into the British Motor Corporation, and later nationalized as part of British Leyland, resulting in a period of stagnation.

In 1984, Jaguar was split off and privatized, and under Ford's subsequent ownership saw a revival with models like the XK8 and XJ.

Since 2008, Jaguar has thrived under the ownership of India's Tata Motors, launching acclaimed new models like the F-Type sports car and the F-Pace, its first SUV, while remaining true to its heritage of graceful styling and sporting performance.
