The history of the David Brown tractor company traces back to 1860 when David Brown established the firm in Huddersfield, England to manufacture pattern-making machinery and gear cutting equipment.
In 1936, the company expanded into tractor production with the acquisition of Harrison, McGregor & Guest Ltd's Albion tractor patents and designs. The first David Brown tractor model, the VAK1, launched in 1939 and featured a 6-cylinder diesel engine.
During World War II, David Brown focused on manufacturing aircraft tugs and other military equipment.
After the war, the company introduced the Cropmaster tractor which became highly popular with farmers. In 1955, David Brown acquired the old Aston Martin car factory in Feltham and the Lagonda brand, operating them as separate divisions.
The 1960s saw the launch of the advanced 990 tractor series. In 1972, David Brown's tractor division was sold to Tenneco International and rebranded as "Case Brown" before eventually becoming part of the Case IH brand.
The David Brown name lives on today in a line of high-end tractors still manufactured and marketed by Case IH. The company played an important role in the mechanization of agriculture in the 20th century and left a lasting legacy in tractor design and engineering.
