Austin Cars, founded by Herbert Austin in 1905 in Longbridge, England, has a rich and storied history in the British automotive industry.
The company started out manufacturing single-cylinder automobiles but quickly expanded its lineup. One of its early successes was the Austin 7, introduced in 1922, which helped put the company on the map and made automobiles more accessible and affordable for the British public.
The "Baby Austin," as it was affectionately known, featured an innovative 747cc engine and sold very well, remaining in production for 17 years.
Over the decades, Austin became known for a variety of influential models like the Austin 12, Austin 16, and Austin 20.
In 1952, Austin merged with the Nuffield Organization to form the British Motor Corporation (BMC), later joining with Jaguar to become British Motor Holdings and eventually being absorbed into British Leyland. The Austin marque was used until 1987.
Austin played a key role in the British war effort during World War II, building aircraft like the Lancaster bomber.
Throughout its history, Austin was involved in motorsports, seeing success in rallying during the 1960s with the Austin-Healey 3000.
Many famous Britons drove Austins over the years, including author George Orwell and singer John Lennon.
Though no longer in existence, the legacy of Austin Cars lives on as an important chapter in 20th century British automotive history.
