The HSV Monaro GTO and GTS coupes were high-performance variants developed by Holden Special Vehicles using the Holden Monaro V2 coupe platform. While the basic coupe body structure carried over from the Holden V2 Monaro, HSV introduced a number of engineering and styling revisions that transformed the vehicle into a dedicated performance model. These coupes combined the long-door Monaro body design with HSV chassis tuning and powertrain packages derived from HSV performance sedans.
The HSV coupes retained the distinctive V2 Monaro sheetmetal including the two-door coupe body structure, long front doors and shortened rear overhang. HSV then introduced its own exterior styling components, interior trim details and chassis tuning to create a model that sat above the standard Holden Monaro in both performance and equipment.
HSV Monaro Coupe Model Range
The HSV V2 coupe range consisted of two primary performance models.
• HSV GTO Coupe
• HSV GTS Coupe
Both vehicles were designed as high-performance grand touring coupes with HSV engineering applied to the suspension, styling and interior equipment.
HSV Powertrain and Performance Engineering
The HSV GTO and GTS coupes used the Gen III V8 powertrain architecture shared with HSV performance sedans of the same period. These engines were derived from the LS-series V8 family used across the HSV VX performance range and were tuned to deliver strong power and torque suitable for a high-performance rear-wheel-drive coupe.
The use of the Gen III V8 engine gave the HSV coupes significantly higher performance capability compared with standard Monaro models and reinforced their position within the HSV performance lineup.
Suspension and Chassis Development
HSV introduced suspension revisions designed to improve handling stability and driver feedback. The chassis tuning applied to the HSV coupes focused on maintaining the grand-touring character of the Monaro while improving cornering performance and road control.
The GTS coupe in particular featured HSV-tuned suspension systems developed to deliver sharper handling characteristics while still providing suitable ride comfort for everyday road use.
Interior Equipment and Trim
HSV interior revisions were introduced to complement the coupe body layout and performance focus.
• Two-passenger rear seat configuration
• Eight-way EZ Entry front seats
• Memory-type driver’s seat adjustment
• HSV floor mats
• HSV door sill appliqué
These changes provided a more distinctive interior environment compared with standard Holden Monaro models.
Exterior Styling Features
HSV also introduced several visual changes that distinguished the coupes from Holden production models.
• HSV-designed side skirts
• HSV front bumper fascia
• HSV rear bumper fascia
These styling elements helped visually separate the HSV models from standard Monaro variants while retaining the underlying V2 coupe body architecture.
While this guide helps identify common specifications and features of the HSV Monaro GTO and GTS V2 Series models, the Holden workshop manuals available from Car Manuals Direct include the original specifications, adjustment settings and repair procedures used by Holden mechanics when servicing V2 Holden vehicles and their standard mechanical components.
