Specifications and technical data
Bore, stroke and compression ratio. Power and torque figures. Valve timing and clearances. Oil pressure. Capacities and adjustment settings. Details of the block, crankcase, head, pistons, rings, rods, crankshaft, camshaft and main bearings.
Removing, stripping and rebuilding the engine
How to get the engine out and back in, including the mountings. Cylinder head removal and refitting. Rocker shaft, rocker arms and push rods. Valve removal, inspection and grinding, plus springs and guides. Pistons, rings and connecting rods. Crankshaft and main bearings. Camshaft, timing chain and flywheel. Block and crankcase inspection, then full reassembly.
Cooling system
Radiator removal and refitting, thermostat testing, and the water pump stripped down to its spindle, bearings, impeller and seals. Fan belt adjustment, draining, flushing and general maintenance, with diagrams. There’s also a section on why an A40 overheats and what to do about it.
Fuel system and carburettors
The Zenith 30 VIG-8 fitted to the saloons and the twin SU carburettors on the Sports models. Float chambers, jets, needle valves, choke and throttle operation, cleaning, servicing and slow-running adjustment. The mechanical fuel pump is covered from dismantling to reassembly, along with the tank, fuel lines, throttle linkage, manifolds, air cleaner and fuel delivery faults.
Lubrication
How oil moves round the engine. Sump, strainer, oil pump and its drive, the pressure relief valve and how to check oil pressure. It also covers wear and faults caused by oil problems.
Ignition and tuning
Distributor removal and refitting, drive and vacuum advance, contact points and ignition timing. Spark plug cleaning, adjustment and firing order. Valve clearance adjustment and general running adjustments.
Clutch
The Borg and Beck single dry-plate clutch: cover and pressure plate, driven plate and linings, release bearing, withdrawal fork, pedal linkage, free-play and release lever adjustment, and relining the plate.
Fault diagnosis
For engine problems like loss of power, low compression, burnt or sticking valves, worn rings, heavy oil consumption, low oil pressure, bearing failure, overheating, backfiring and intermittent running, you get the likely causes and what to do about each.
